The Red Sea Project is grounded in sustainability and sustainable tourism in its fullest sense. Our master plan is informed by the largest marine spatial planning simulation ever undertaken, modeling the environmental impact of developing and operating the destination.
Tourism, properly harnessed, can and must serve the needs of the environment if it is to be sustainable in the long term.
This includes protecting the environment and the species that call it home, as well as supporting the local communities living in close proximity to the destination.
We are committed to aligning the Project with all 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Environmental Baseline Survey
Our year-long study of The Red Sea coast is the largest ever environmental survey by a development company and will serve as the baseline for honoring our ambition to deliver meaningful net conservation benefits through biodiversity enhancement efforts
Ancient reptile fossils found
In partnership with the Saudi Geological Survey, we carried out advanced geological and paleontological research across both The Red Sea Project and AMAALA sites and revealed several significant findings - including the bones of an enormous marine lizard over 80 million years old.
Enablon platform rollout
We are delighted to announce that we have successfully implemented company-wide data enterprise software system Enablon to automate manual tools and processes currently used by our HSE, Sustainability and GRC functions.
MOU with Ethmar and Ghoroos
We are pleased to announce that we have signed an MoU with Saudi social investment company Ethmar and private foundation Ghoroos to deliver social development initiatives in agriculture, community service and volunteer work, which are crucial to the regenerative approach adopted at The Red Sea Project.

Blue Planet Ecosystems MoUs

Sustainable bottled water
We awarded a contract to Source Water to produce a sustainable bottled water brand at The Red Sea using patented solar technology that draws pure water vapor out of the air and converts it to premium mineralized drinking water.
Sustainable Transport Consultancy Awarded
We awarded a contract to global engineering firm Mott MacDonald to deliver an analysis of the total transport needs for The Red Sea. This will involve a strategy for destination-wide clean mobility using electric and hydrogen vehicles, boats and aircraft.
100% Renewable Energy
An ACWA Power-led consortium was awarded our highest-value contract to date to design, build, operate and transfer The Red Sea Project’s utilities infrastructure, powered 100% by renewable energy 24/7 with the build of the world's largest battery facility.
On-site Employment Seminar

Marine Spatial Planning
In partnership with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), we developed a ground-breaking marine spatial planning simulation – utilizing software specially developed in the Kingdom – to assess developmental impact and enhance biodiversity.
Brains for Brine
Where solutions do not yet exist for sustainability challenges, we are seeking the innovators and experts that can help us solve them. Our Brains for Brine initiative looks for sustainable solutions for the management of brine discharged from the water desalination process.
We hired a team of Sustainability Stewards to support with the delivery of a number of ongoing and soon-to-launch initiatives at the site. The team consists of a Project Manager and a Senior Specialist, four supervisors and 30 stewards.
We launched a Turtle Tagging program in September 2019, tracking the movements of 20 Green turtles. The program is set to expand in 2020 with an additional 20 Hawksbill turtles tagged and monitored by the environmental team at TRSDC and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
Largest Dark Sky Reserve in the World
We are working with Cundall, an international multi-disciplinary consultancy, to develop a lighting strategy that provides enough lighting for safe movement around the site, whilst meeting stringent International Dark Sky criteria. This will allow us to seek an accreditation that recognizes areas with an exceptional quality of starry nights and a commitment to protecting the nocturnal environment.
Landscaping Nursery Staffed by Locals
We welcomed 45 employees from Umluj and Al Wajh to work at our 100-hectare site nursery, which will provide upwards of 15 million plants for landscaping and sustainability initiatives.
Private Sector Engagement
Working with Munsha’at, we engaged with the local private sector to encourage their participation in the project and provide valuable insights on the procurement process at TRSDC.
We appointed AlFalah Ready Mix for the provision of low carbon concrete, manufactured utilizing recycled raw materials, to support with the supply requirements of our construction projects in the initial phases of the project while meeting our environmental sustainability goals.
At Red Sea Global, we aim to set new standards in regenerative development, respecting the natural world, creating opportunities for the local communities and protecting the destination for the future.
We aspire to be the world leader in environmental regeneration across planning, construction and operation. Developmental, regulatory, and technological measures will ensure we protect, preserve and enhance the natural environment.
As a result of our marine spatial planning exercise, our master plan predicts a 30 percent net conservation benefit in the next two decades and we’re leaving 75% of our island archipelago untouched, with 9 islands designated special conservation zones.
We are planning to power the destination with 100 percent renewable energy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, all of which will be generated by solar and wind. To do this, we’re building the largest battery storage facility in the world to guarantee supply at night-time.
A Principled Approach
We are developing a regulatory framework that comprises innovative policies and strategies to facilitate our ambitious sustainability and regeneration commitments. This includes the regulation of fisheries, removal of invasive species in the area, conservation zones and the expansion of green and blue habitats to encourage regeneration and carbon sequestration.
We’ve invested heavily in innovative construction methods such as off-site manufacturing while we are using sustainable products and materials, for example green concrete.
